Provisional driving licence

The first step in learning to drive is to obtain a Provisional Driving Licence for Great Britain or Northern Ireland. This is required before you can take the theory or practical driving test, and before you can drive on the road and therefore take lessons. When you start to drive, you must make sure that any vehicle you drive is roadworthy and properly taxed and insured.

You can obtain a provisional driving licence application form from Astute Driving, your local post office or by contacting the DVLA direct on 0870 240 0009. You can apply for your provisional car driving licence up to three months before your seventeenth birthday (however, it will not become valid until you turn seventeen).
